Lot Essay
When the Ojibwa began moving onto the plains in the 1700s they began changing to a Plains cultural lifestyle. Among the changes was the shift from Woodlands clothing base forms to those utilized by the Plains tribes. The tobacco bag offered here is a prime example of the combination of Woodlands art and Plains form. It contains exceptional floral beadwork on the elongated bag shape favored by the Plains peoples. The long hide neckpiece, along with the long and fine fringe, shows an elegant product of the peak of Plains Ojibwa culture, (Ref. Peers, Winnipeg, 1994).
