HARRISON, Benjamin. ALS ("Your affectionate Father Benj Harrison"), to his son Russell [1854-1936], Indianapolis, In., 12 August 1887. 8 pp., 4o. An exceptionally long letter on financial matters. I CANNOT ADVANCE ANY MONEY FOR I HAVE NOT GOT IT. "This morning I send $1500 - one half of the fee in the Will case but only $500 goes to my house account. I shall probably get the other $1500 early next week. These sums would make me very comfortable if I did not have to divide them by three. I can of course meet the draft you have drawn, tho at considerable inconvenience but I do not see how I can advance any more. I have now $5000 borrowed from the only bank I can go to and I do not see how I can increase my debt. You do not distinctly say that you want $1500 of me during this month but I infer you do and I do not see how I can get the money. Can you not sell some of your accounts to someone in the County indebted to you? You must try and return this money to me as soon as you can...And now for the Journal Co. You must run it so that it will pay its own bills... You must realize that your borrowing ability is exhausted. I now owe $13000 & it will take two years of hard work and economy to pay it off out of my practice. I cannot go further into debt....
