The basic pattern of this ribbon-scrolled splat features on a number of chairs illustrated in J.Kirk, American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, New York, 1982, including an armchair (fig. 5) bearing the stamp of Samuel Sharp of Norwich, Norfolk (fl.1720-1761).
