A FLEMISH POLYCHROME-DECORATED EBONISED CABINET ON A GEORGE III EBONISED MAHOGANY STAND
Late 17th Early 18th Century
The rectangular moulded hinged top above a concave spreading frieze, above a pair of moulded panelled hinged doors enclosing a fitted interior of nine painted panels of pastoral and hunting scenes, with nine variously-sized drawers arranged around a central mirrored architectural recess with chequerboard floor, above two drawers the sides each with four panels and carrying-handles, on an 18th Century associated English stand with geometrically-decorated apron, pierced angle-brackets, on chamfered square legs with conforming decoration, the stand reduced in width to fit the cabinet, inscribed in chalk to the underside 'damaged' the angle-brackets later, later ebonised on a veneered ground with crossbanding, restorations, originally with a picture to the top well, the interior probably originally with a further door

A related cabinet with a similar arrangment of painted drawers around a columned centre, is illustrated in R. Fabri, 'Les Cabinets Anversois', L'Estampille, November 1988, p. 29. A further closely related cabinet with similar pastoral scenes, was sold anonymously, Christie's Rome, 15 October 1991, lot 172.
