Rand's husband Frank O'Connor (to whom, along with her lover Nathaniel Branden, she dedicated Atlas Shrugged) came to painting late in life, taking it up after he and Rand had moved to New York from Los Angeles is the early 1950s. For years, the relationship between Rand and Frank, and Nathaniel and his wife Barbara, was extremely close, the communication open enough that Rand and Branden conducted their affair with the full knowledge of their respective partners. As a gesture of their ongoing friendship, O'Connor presented the painting to the young Branden (even signing the back). Branden returned the canvas after the terrible break with Rand and the Collective circle in 1968 when he admitted his love and continuing romance with a young Objectivist student. [With]: RAND, Ayn. TNS ("AR") on The Objectivist letterhead, to Nathaniel Branden, New York, [September, 1968]. 1 pg, 4o. Post-split, Rand tells Branden that the painting is his to keep.
