GRADUAL, Proper of time, from the first Sunday of Advent to Passion Sunday. MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Spain, 16th century]. 522 x 340 mm. 178 leaves, of more than 200. Quires of four bifolia, with oblique catchwords at right sides of lower margins on last versos. Seven very large initials the height of two or three staves in red and blue, with red and blue pen-flourishing and marginal extensions; numerous large initials the height of one stave in red or blue pen-flourished in the other color, or calligraphic initials in black ink partially filled with green and yellow. 10 leaves with portions of blank margins cut away, ca. 12 leaves torn and sometimes with old repairs but without loss of text, ca. 10 pages creased in margins, faint dampstain to upper margins, occasional smudges.) Contemporary blind-ruled leather over heavy wooden boards, evidence of one clasp, five of eight elaborate brass cornerpiece bosses (some wear, minor losses to head and tail of spine, hinges cracking).
