The rounded rectangular hinged top with scrolled overhanging lappeted gallery, the tapering body with two lion-masks, each holding a ring in its mouth, above a lappeted concave-moulded base with anthemion and C-scroll apron, on lion-paw feet with sunk brass castors, locked, minor losses to carving

Lot Essay

A design for a related cistern of 'Roman bath' form with paired bacchic ring-bearing lion-masks above 'paw' feet features in a drawing attributed to George Bullock (d. 1818) in the Tew archives (illustrated in Christie's catalogue, Great Tew Park, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, p. 117). A related cistern 'after the antique' with robust palm-wrapped plinth, featured in George Smith's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826 (pl. LXXV).
