With curved tablet toprail decorated with three star-centred circles, between turned stiles and above three spheres and a horizontal splat, with a panelled seat, above a star-decorated seat-rail, the down-curved legs joined by a turned baluster stretcher, on metal castors, the decoration distressed, the seat originally caned

Lot Essay

The basic form of this 'curule' patterned chair, with star-enriched tablet-rail, derives from a mahogany armchair designed by Thomas Hope (d.1842) for the breakfast room, dedicated to the dawn goddess Aurora, at this Duchess street mansion/museum. The chair was illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pls. VII and XX, nos. 3 and 4.

A related pair of ebony-inlaid mahogany chairs was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 4 July 1996, lot 390.
