Lot Essay
The basic form of this 'curule' patterned chair, with star-enriched tablet-rail, derives from a mahogany armchair designed by Thomas Hope (d.1842) for the breakfast room, dedicated to the dawn goddess Aurora, at this Duchess street mansion/museum. The chair was illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pls. VII and XX, nos. 3 and 4.
