The present work is a preparatory sketch for an altarpiece for which Pellegrini may have received the commission while he was living in Antwerp, where he was recorded as a member of the Guild of Saint Luke between 18 September 1716 and 17 September 1717. As Knox notes (op. cit., 1995, p. 132), the present sketch 'has the turbulence of the altarpiece for the Clemenskirche at Hanover, The Ascension of Christ, and is different to the cool classicism of the Saint Cecilia altarpiece in the same church'.
