Designed in the French 'antique' manner, this side chair, with its 'Roman' acanthus carved knees is related to the celebrated suite with needlework reputedly worked by the Countess of Mornington and sold from the collection of the late James Ivory Esq., in these Rooms on 6 July 1989, lots 52-55, while its acanthus-enriched voluted feet can be seen upon the suite of chairs at Chatsworth and illustrated in R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, rev. ed., 1977, p.143, fig.103.
