Lot Essay

The present composition shows the influence of Adriaen van Ostade and the Rotterdam painters, Pieter de Bloot and Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh, who developed this genre of stable interiors with still life elements from Flemish prototypes by David Teniers the Younger. The composition of the group of smoking boors in the background follows the engraving by Adriaen van Ostade (Bartsch 15).

We are grateful to Mr. Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution to van Buesem.
