Lot Essay
Following the publications of Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 and George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, tables supported by animal monopodia became very popular. A partner's desk with almost identical lion monopodia supports on the corner of each pedestal, was offered at Sotheby's London, 5 July 1996, lot 121. A table with very similar lion monopodia was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 30 January 1982, lot 169. It is illustrated in G.Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, 1987, p. 246, fig. 1.
