A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, YONGLE MARK AND PERIOD (1403-1424)
The flat circular cover decorated with two scholars in long gowns seated inside a pavilion, on the balustraded terrace two attendants, one with a covered box the other carrying a qin, the roof of a further pavilion through trees on the lakeside, the entire scene surrounded by various trees, shrubs and rocks and a large overhanging pine tree, all finely and crisply carved, the sides of both the box and the cover with matching flower scrolls camellia, peony, chrysanthemum and rose, with blooms, buds and leaves carved to an ochre ground, the interior and base lacquered black, a six character Yongle reign mark incised with a fine point in a vertical line on the left-hand side of the base, cracks and minor losses

Lot Essay

Several lacquer boxes of this type are recorded, all carved with different but closely related scenes of scholars in garden settings, surrounded by pavilions and trees and with a lake in the background, with flower scrolls around the sides, and inscribed with Yongle reign marks, for example, in Peking, illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, pls. 63-70
