Sir William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester, K.G. (1485-1572), was elevated to the Peerage 9 March 1538-39 as Baron St. John of Basing and was appointed one of the executors of the will of King Henry VIII. He was created Earl of Wiltshire in 1549/50 and in 1551, Marquess of Winchester. He was installed as a Knight of the Garter and was Lord Treasurer of England during the reign of King Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. When asked how he had preserved their treasureship through so many years he replied 'By being a willow, not an oak'. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Alderman Sir William Capel, K.T. of the city of London and was succeeded by his son, John.
