EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Albert') to Mileva Einstein-Maric, Le Coq [sur Mer, Belgium], 29 April 1933, 2 pages, 4to (two spots, and very light soiling on verso).

Einstein in exile. Einstein has been surprised and delighted by Mileva's offer of a refuge in Zurich. In fact, the offer of a permanent position in Princeton has meant that his material situation is not as bad as it seems. He has given up on his savings in Berlin: not only have they been confiscated, but he expects the political situation in Germany to lead to a devaluation of the currency. 'Nowadays it is hardly possible to plan for the future, since everything is in flux'. He cannot go to Zurich to see Eduard as planned, since his life is in danger: 'Even here I live under special police protection, because I am recognised by the Nazis as a dangerous opponent, not indeed because there is a possibility that I might become politically active, but because of my influence abroad'. His work with his colleagues is proceeding with great success: 'das ist meine schönste Befriedigung' (that is my greatest satisfaction). His influence outside Germany means he can do some good; 'Dort aber bin ich jetzt einer der best gehassten Menschen' (but there I am one of the most hated of men). He concludes resignedly 'It is amusing how unstable and unpredictable human relations are'.

A fine letter demonstrating Einstein's imperturbability during one of the most difficult periods of his life. By September his security in Belgium was no longer guaranteed, and he retreated to England, thence to the United States the following month. He was never to return to Europe.
