This deed is likely to be related to grants of land at Newton made to the abbey by Robert de Ferrers, 2nd Earl of Derby, and his son William, 3rd Earl, who held the title 1150s-1190 (though it is to be noted that the 4th and 5th Earls were also named William). Combermere Abbey holdings at Newton extended in total to four carrucates, valued in 1535 as yielding £6.13s.4d per annum. A carrucate was as much as could be ploughed by one plough and eight oxen in a year. The charter's script would indicate a date at the turn of the 12th-13th Centuries.

The abbey at Combermere outside Nantwich was founded by the Sévigny congregation in 1133, being absorbed with the other houses of that order into the Cistercian order in 1147. At the Dissolution the abbey was taken into the possession of the Cotton family; the main body of Combermere deeds is now with the archive of the Corbets of Adderley in Shropshire Record Office. (2)
