LAWRENCE, Thomas Edward (1888-1935). Autograph letter signed (twice, 'T.E.S.'and 'T.E.') [to Mrs Lionel Curtis], n.p. [Cranwell], 17 February 1926, 3 lines on recto, the remainder on verso, 1½ pages, 8vo (paperclip stains in upper margin).
Announcing with levity that he has had 'a mystery ailment which puzzled me for days: then it turned into...measles! Did you ever hear of anything so silly?', anticipating that 'half the flight will get it, now'. Lawrence hopes that 'the Prophet' is better, and had 'a horrible ride back, but the bike behaved like a saint'. He is going to Nottingham 'for fun, and to cure a sore throat'.
Written after Lawrence had rejoined the RAF in August 1925 when he was posted to Cranwell in Lincolnshire. The 'bike' to which he refers was his fourth Brough motorcyle, the latest model which he christened 'Boanerges', and the 'ride back' was probably from the funeral of C.M. Doughty, author of Travels in Arabia Deserta, which he attended in London the previous week.
