2° (461 x 300mm). Half-title, engraved headpiece, and 72 engraved plates by Percier and Fontaine. (Some light spotting of plates and browning of plate margins, plates 22 and 64 torn at margin.) Contemporary roan-backed boards (extremities worn). Second edition, the first edition with descriptive text. Some copies have an engraved additional title, although this is not called for in the bibliographies. Berlin Kat. 4056; Cicognara 605; Fowler 244.

Engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved dedications, one on India paper, mounted, and 38 plates, the majority engravings or aquatints, 3 hand-coloured, one double-page and folding, some lithographs and one mounted albumen print which is unnumbered. Engraved and aquatint vignettes, several mounted. (Some marginal soiling and occasional slight dampstains at margins, some lower margins slightly bumped, plate 15 in the second part torn at lower margin.) Provenance: Mirehouse (armorial bookplate). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, based on Cockerell's researches and those of Haller von Hallerstein during their travels in the Levant some 45 years earlier.
