LEE, Robert E. (1807-1879), General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("R.E. Lee Bvt. Col. Lt. Col. 2 Cav. Comdg. Regt."), to C. S. Cooper, Adjutant General U.S.A., Louisville, Kentucky, 30 April 1855. 1¼ pages, 4to, in ink on lined stationery. Fine condition.
"THE ADVANCEMENT OF A FAITHFUL SOLDIER". Lee, commanding the Second Cavalry, writes: "I enclose...an application from Sergt. Hulton & Private Borgguest of the M[oun]t[e]d Service...to be transferred to the 2nd. Cavalry. Co. Sumner...objects to the transfer of the former, and directs he be sent to Jefferson B[arrac]ks. I had hoped that both these men, not having been on regimental recruit Service, being unassigned, could without injury to the...service, have been transferred...to the 2nd Cav[alr]y. Sergt. Hulton was Ord[nan]ce Sergt. two enlistments, & Private Borgguest, served an enlistment in the M[oun]td Rifles. Their former service, I should think, would entitle their application to favorable consideration. Moreover I have it in contemplation to appoint Sergt. Hulton Sergt. Major of the 2nd Cavalry so soon as he can be spared from his present duty, which I did not wish to interrupt. Lt. Garrard...informs me that Sergt. Hulton 'has always borne a high character as a Soldier, is a good penman, has a tolerably good knowledge of papers, & is a sober & reliable man.' I feel assured that Col. Sumner would not urge his objection, if it should interfere with the advancement of a faithful soldier, while at the same time it promoted the Cavry. Service...."
