"MAD" ANTHONY WAYNE'S GARRISON AT TICONDEROGA

A dramatic, very attractive document, neatly ruled into boxes and columns, with heading (as above), divided into two sections. The upper portion, labelled "Corps," lists officers in command of each unit at the left. These commanders include Seth Warner (1743-1784), John Stark (1728-1822) and seven other officers. To the right, columns are provided for a tally of Officers, Commissioned and Non-Commissioned (by rank, from Colonel to Ensign), Staff (including surgeons, chaplains, quartermasters, even drummers and fifers). Under "Rank and File" are tallied men "present, fit for duty," "sick present" (54 men), "sick absent," and "on furlow" (none), for a grand total of 756 men. Below is a similar section containing returns for the "Corps of Artillery," divided into Officers, Staff and "Matrosses" for a total of 96 men. Below the two boxes is a neat addition: "In the Fleet Two Captains, two Lieuts. and Eight Seamen."

Wayne, a Colonel with a Pennsylvania Regiment, had participated in the Canadian invasion and fought at Trois Rivières. On 18 November 1776 he was named commandant at Ticonderoga. From a total of about 1,200 men, Wayne's force was steadily reduced by the expiration of enlistments and he was forced to deal with incipient mutiny on at least two occasions. In February, Congress had promoted Wayne to Brigadier General and soon after this return, on 12 April, he was ordered to join Washington's army in command of the Pennsylvania Line.
