Personal journal of George Macy Webb, a sailor on the whaler Noble, and other vessels, interspersed with verse stanzas ("The Lass of Gowrey," and "The Pride of Kildare"), dated entries from 17 July 1843 -- 1 March 1849. 97 pages, 4to, light dampstains, rebound in recent red cloth, gilt spine label. EMBELLISHED WITH FOUR SMALL DRAWINGS OF WHALES AND A VIEW OF A WARSHIP. Webb's journal is primarily devoted to the whaling voyage of the Noble, which took the vessel around the Cape to the Pacific whaling grounds; in brief entries he notes many sightings ("saw whale but got none"), a number of chases in the longboats and some successful kills ("the whale had 35 bar[rels] sperm") and many encounters with other whaling vessels during the voyage. He is careful to note what sails the vessel was using in different weather conditions. A second, undated section of the manuscript is entitled "Journal of a Passage From one of the Western Islands to England in the Ship Venus," mostly in tabular form; following that are several pages of daily accounts ("one day's work cutting timber," "carting 13 loads of dung," etc).
