BIERSTADT, Albert (1830-1902). Autograph letter signed ("Albert Bierstadt") probably to the author Edmund Clarence Stedman ("Dear Stedman"), New York, 22 January 1886. 1 page, 8vo, personal stationery, with colorful personal monogram incorporating a honeybee, fine. "It is a great honor to be classed among your friends in the manner proposed by your letter...I send you the best photograph I have..." [With]: BIERSTADT. Original pen-and-ink drawing, signed "A.B.," possibly a self-portrait. The "photograph" mentioned in the letter may in fact have been the present drawing, which depicts a standing figure in antique, courtier-like garb, with plumed hat, leaning jauntily on his sword. The German-born Bierstadt, one of the later members of the Hudson River school, painted many important landscapes of the newly opened American West. His letters are uncommon. (2)
