[BAEGERT, Jacob (1717-1772)].
8o (169 x 98 mm). Errata leaf at end. Folding engraved map of Baja California and 2 engraved plates of native Californians, by E. Verelst, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, ornamental woodcut initials. (Plates browned and with small marginal dampstain.) 19th-century half calf, smooth spine divided into three compartments by geometrical design of gilt fillets, marbled edges.
FIRST EDITION. Baegert was a Jesuit missionary in Lower California from 1751 until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In this account he seeks to disprove the (still-) prevailing myth of California as land of plenty, emphasizing instead the merciless heat, dangerous animals, hostile terrain, and untrustworthiness of its inhabitants. The book is nonetheless filled with valuable ethnographical and historical information. Chapter 20 is devoted to the Waicuri language. The map shows the location of the many Jesuit missions in Baja California and the route taken by the author in his journeys to and from the region. The two plates are not included in all copies.
A FINE COPY OF A RARE AMERICANUM. Cowan, p. 9; de Backer/Sommervogel 760; Graff 137; Howes B-29; Sabin 4363; Streeter sale IV, 2441; Wagner Spanish Southwest, 157.
