Printer's woodcut device on title, woodcut of two angels holding up the arms of the Republic of Genoa on verso of title, the cross in the arms stencil-colored in red, woodcut historiated initials and one tail-piece. With blank leaf CC6. (Small marginal hole to title, occasional very faint foxing.) 17th-century mottled calf, sides gilt panelled, spine gilt with drawer handle tools, fleurons and pointillé tools, board edges gilt, edges mottled red and green (joints split, extremities rubbed).
FIRST EDITION of this history of Genoa. The Italian scholar and diplomat Bizarri (or Bizzarri) served the English crown in the late 1570s and later worked in the service of the Elector August of Saxony. His history of Genoa to 1578 includes a series of studies on expeditions or wars in which Genoa took part and sections on Genoese laws, and includes a long acount of Columbus and early Spanish exploration of the New World.
