WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883), German composer. Autograph letter signed ("Richard Wagner") to Franz von Dingelstedt, Director of the Weimar theater; Karlsruhe, 12 November 1863. 1 page, large 4to, integral blank, fine. An important, relatively early letter, written the year in which the libretto of Das Ring des Nibelungen was published and attracted the attention of his patron King Ludwig of Bavaria. Looking forward to the production of Tristan und Isolde some eighteen months in the future, Wagner writes to the director of the theater at Weimar and apologizes for the delay in answering his letter: "The main reason that I am not able to give you an answer right now, is my perplexity towards all theatre projects, which led me to complete resignation" (perhaps alluding to the riot which attended the 1861 Parisian production of Tannhaüser). Wagner also announces a visit to Weimar, where he will be meeting with the King to express his gratitude for his support and at which time he would like to meet Dingelstedt to discuss his questions.
