NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, Emperor of France. Letter signed ("Bonaparte" with flourish) to Faipoult, Minister of the Republic of Geneva, Head Quarters, Bologna, 2 Messidor An 4 [20 June 1796]. 1 page, folio, integral address leaf, on pictorial stationery headed "Republique Francáise," "Liberté Egalité/," and with large engraved vignette of seated liberty within a garland and clouds. Fine. THE DAY AFTER HIS VICTORY AT BOLOGNA. An interesting letter announcing the successful seige of Bologna. After marrying Josephine on 9 March, Napoleon departed to take command of the Armée d'Italie; here, early in the campaign, Napoleon informs the minister of the recent victories and an intercepted communique: "You will find attached, my dear minister, a letter [not present] written to Mr. Girola and his response...I intercepted from a courier from [General] Beaulieu. I am impatiently waiting for the courier that you must send to me in order to inform me of the response of the senate to Murat's request. We have been at Bologna since yesterday; we seized Fort Urbano, where we took 900 prisoners and found 40 cannons, 50 thousand of powder and 5000 guns. We have made the lawful Cardinal at Bologna a prisoner of war. I embrace you with all my heart." Three days after writing this letter, Napoleon signed an armistice with the Papacy; on the 25th he departed Bologna for Pistoia.
