Several small figures of elephants were modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reineke around 1745-1747, the earliest possibly being the figure without the trappings, an example of which is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Meissener Porzellan, pl. 258, no. 1051. A very slightly larger pair with more elaborate trappings exists also, and examples are illustrated by Carl Albiker, Die Meissner Porzellantiere, 1935, pl. XLVI, nos. 203 and 207. One of the latter examples as well as of an elephant similar to the model in this lot, but lacking the cushion, mounted in ormolu to form a pair, is illustrated by K. Butler, Meissner Porzellanplastik des 18.Jahrhunerts, the Hermitage catalogue, nos. 98 and 99. Another elephant of this rare fully caparisoned model was in the Jahn Collection, sold at Lempertz in Cologne on 12 June 1989, lot 200.
