Lot Essay

The mark 'ST' was used by the lock manufacturer Bricard who had acquired the stock of the lock retailer Sterlin in the 1760s. Two other Louis XVI ormolu locks of comparable form and quality were formerly in the Alexander Collection, (sold Christie's New York, 30 April, 1999, lots 66-67). The same stamp was, however, also employed in the late 19th Century, as can be seen on the window hardware offered as lot 311.
