Lot Essay

With their distintive domed acanthus-wrapped socle with reed-gadrooned border, the bases of these candlesticks relate to the documented oeuvre of the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre, possibly after a design by Jean-Demosthène Dugourc (1749-1825). A pair of candlesticks which display this model of base are in the Wallace Collection, London (P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture, London, 1996, F174-5, p.1249-50). The Wallace model is first recorded on 26 June 1783, when the ciseleur-fondeur François Rémond invoiced Daguerre Pour fonte, facon Et Dorure mate d'une pre de grands flambeaux a 4. figures, Et a guirlandes et fleur, Etc 1050 livres. Thus Rémond executed the casting, chasing and gilding to the direct order of Daguerre, who in all probability owned the master model.
