A New GLOBE of the EARTH by N. Lane 1776 Prockter fc
A fine 2¾-inch (7cm.) diameter pocket terrestrial globe, made up of twelve copper plate engraved paper gores, the equator graduated in degrees 1 - 180° (x2) and hours I - XII (x2), the anti-meridian graduated in degrees, the Meridian of London ungraduated, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the oceans with arrows for monsoons off the west coast of India, the tracks of Ansons going out, Ansons return and Cap.t Cook's Track with a note at Hawaii reading Here C. Cook was Killed, the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans labelled FROZEN OCEAN, the Atlantic beneath the bulge of Africa labelled THE ETHIOPIC OCEAN, the continents hand-coloured in outline in red, green and yellow with national boundaries shown in dotted outline, showing rivers and deserts, but no towns or cities, China with the Chinese Wall and labelled EMPIRE OF CHINA, South Africa labelled Country of the Hottentots, Columbia labelled Terra Firma, California shown as a peninsula, much of northern America with little detail and no northern coastline, Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND and joined to Tasmania, which is labelled Dimens Land (small areas of varnish loss to Africa, no apparent paper damage, axis pins missing), in the original spherical fishskin-covered case with red-painted rims, the interior laid with two sets of twelve celestial copper plate engraved and hand-coloured celestial gores, the equatorial and colures graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and labelled in Latin (area approx. 3 x 1cm. of loss to fishskin resulting in small section approx. 4mm. square of paper loss, some slight wrinkling to gores), with two brass hooks and eyes
