[CALIFORNIA/CANADA] Four items of correspondence from a Walter Thomas Vlieland who travelled with the army in the 6th Infantry, first to California and then to Vancouver Island, Canada, comprising:
Autograph letter on blue lined paper, from Fort Mojave, Colorado River, California, dated 31 July 1859, 3pp, 4°, to his mother, giving news of his journey, the terrain 'nothing but a desert country and a few patches of sandy soil on which we hope to raise a few melons and beans', and Indians with whom they made a treaty '...very cowardly and poorly armed', with integral address panel (creased and stained on folds).
Three autograph letters from Victoria, Vancouver Island, 21 March 1863, 15 November 1863 and 14 January 1865, 12pp, 4°, to his mother, affectionate letters mentioning domestic matters but talking about making a fortune 'the chances are 100 to 10 against me through the diggins here being worked only at great expense...seldom paying claims have been found'. It would appear that he was unsuccessful, writing in November for more funds but ever hopeful his fortunes will change, even in 1865, suffering from poor health and destitute he has 'every confidence' of succeeding (creased and soiled).
