Lot Essay

Galilei came to England in 1714, at the invitation of John Molesworth who, together with Sir Thomas Hewett, Surveyor-General of the King's Works, formed 'the new Junta for Architecture'. They aimed to introduce a more classical style into British architecture at a time before Lord Burlington's Palladian revival, and Galilei was chosen as their architect. Despite making designs for several potential patrons, few commissions resulted although he did design Castletown, Co. Kildare and the portico on the east front of Kimbolton Castle. A number of Galilei's unexecuted designs for English buildings can be found in the state archives at Florence, some rather baroque in character.
