Shaw met his wife, Charlotte Payne-Townshend, through Beatrice and Sidney Webb at their rectory at Stratford St. Andrew in 1895. They married on 1st June 1898, a week after this card was written. Despite wanting to keep it secret, Shaw drafted an amusing account of the registry office marriage for The Star which attracted much press interest.
