An ivory study of a tatebina doll, minute chip; an ivory netsuke of a sennin standing and holding a staff, his long fine hair and beard merging with his fur coat, with signature Sozan on the base; another of a man seated on the floor and holding a bowl in his left hand; and a netsuke of two rats standing on a leather pouch with a mask-netsuke, signed Gyokushu

Tatebina are standing dolls used at the Hinamatsuri or Girls' Doll Festival on March 3rd. On this day all homes blessed with girl children display their dolls and heirlooms of the family in an alcove of the home, while feasts for the dolls are prepared on tiny dishes. The dolls can be made of various materials, including paper and cloth which are stiffened to make the doll stand. Tatebina netsuke can complement festival inro.
