A GROUP OF EIGHT MANJU NETSUKE
Edo period (19th century)
A stagshorn manju netsuke pierced and carved with Kan'u holding a halberg over his right shoulder and standing among swirling clouds, the reverse with stylised chrysanthemums, 17/8in. (4.8cm.); another of ivory carved in two sections pierced with chrysanthemums and pawlonias, 17/8in. (4.8cm.); a well-patinated marine ivory manju pierced and carved with various shells among scrolling waves, 17/8in. (4.5cm.); another carved and pierced with a rain-dragon among reishi fungus, 1¾in. (4.5cm.); another of ivory carved and pierced with a coiled dragon among scrolling clouds holding a tama in his claws, 1½in. (3.8cm.); one carved with a dragon among scrolling clouds, 21/8in. (5.2cm.); another of stagshorn carved and pierced with a central plate with a ho-o bird among scrolling clouds, the reverse with floral patterns, 21/8in. (5.2cm.); and another in stained ivory carved and pierced with a hairy rain dragon among reishi, leaves and scrolling clouds (old damage), 17/8in. (4.7cm.) (8)
