AN IVORY KISERUZUTSU [PIPECASE]
Signed Hakki, Edo Period (19th Century)
Carved in relief with on the reverse a Japanese peasant resting beneath a pine tree by a river and on the front two elaborately coiled dragons and a jar surrounding a panel with the sennin Chinnan crossing a river on his hat, a crane flying above, signed near the base Hakki with a recessed red seal Haku, the stopper carved with a monster mask and floral ornament surrounding a roundel inscribed with the characters Shokoku

Lot Essay
The sennin Chinnan, as well as being famous for crossing a stream on his hat, was also able to conjure up dragons from a bowl. The characters Shokoku refer to Isshosai Kokoku (see lot no. 55).
