A WASHIDA (SHONAI) SCHOOL TSUBA AND EIGHT OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A fine circular tsuba of the Washida school of Shonai, inlaid with scrolling vines in brass and silver hirazogan, 8.65cm.; a large Aizu Shoami school tsuba inlaid on the face in shakudo, silver and gold with a sickle and a bundle of tokusa [scouring rushes], more of which are scattered on the reverse, 8.9cm.; a mokko iron mukade tsuba with a brass rim, a thin iron wire ring secured by many alternating iron and brass staples (one missing), additionally decorated on each side with flowers inlaid in two colours of gold, 7.7cm.; a circular iron tsuba, the ground hammered in the 'Nobuie revival' style with nine cherry blossoms floating around a log raft which is pierced through the web, five other cherry blossoms inlaid in silver, gold and shibuichi, 7.6cm.; an oval iron Suruga school tsuba, carved and pierced with writhing seaweed, punched with an ishime surface and with details in gold nunome-zogan, signed Inshu no ju Masatsugu, 7.6cm.; a small iron tsuba of irregular outline, inlaid in shibuichi and gold with a blossoming plum branch before the sun in gold nunome-zogan, the reverse with a seal inlaid in gold within a sunken reserve, 6.3cm.; a circular iron tsuba, pierced and carved with maple leaves and a sho [a kind of mouth organ], details in gold inlay and nunome-zogan, the edge with a brocade pattern in gold nunome-zogan, signed Bushu no ju Masanaga, 8.15cm.; a circular iron nanban tsuba, beaded within the rim and pierced and carved with a winged dragon amongst karakusa-like clouds, swimming among waves, 7.2cm.; and a small circular tsuba, each side with a broad circular groove, signed Yoshu (Iyo) no ju Shoami Morikatsu, 6.8cm.
