Edo period (18th/19th century)
An iron tsuba, the outer shape formed by the design of a horse issuing from a gourd, carved in the plate, signed Nagato Hagi ju Toyotaka sei, 8.1cm.; an iron tsuba powerfully carved with a dragon on each side, the pupils inlaid in gold, signed Echizen no ju Myochin Yoshihisa kore o saku, 6.9cm.; an iron tsuba of rounded square shape, pierced with a bat flying past the moon and with two posts beside a stream which is carved in the plate, grass and stones inlaid in two colours of gold, signed Murakami Shinkyo at 63 years of age and dated Keio [1866], New Year's Day, 8.25cm.; an almost circular iron tsuba carved with a figure of Daikoku, his mallet in his hand, leaning over his sack watching two rats benevolently, the reverse with two rice bales, signed Joun kore o and dated Keio hinoe-tora [1866], 8.65cm.; a mokko iron tsuba in the 'Nobuie revival' style, hammered on the front and back with a design of omodaka [water plantain], plum blossom and cloud and reishi forms over a bekko [tortoiseshell] ground, signed Naoaki, with a kao seal, 7.55cm.; an almost circular tsuba, carved and pierced with a plum tree, the branches of the tree forming the shape at the rim, signed Chohan no ju Toyoaki, 8cm.; and a circular iron tsuba pierced within the rim with a hundred monkey design, the eyes inlaid in gold and the mimi with a cross-hatched decoration of nunome zogan, signed Nagasaki no ju Taira Yoshitsugu, 7.3cm.
