AN UNNO SCHOOL TSUBA AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (19th century)
A rounded square tsuba of pale shibuichi carved and inlaid with a frog sitting on an upturned lotus leaf, signed Moritoshi with a kao, Unno school, 7.3cm.; a brass ishimeji rectangular tsuba inlaid in various metals with a suzuri [inkstone] and brush and a branch of chrysanthemum on the face and a partly used ink-stick, signed Tenryu, 7.2cm.; a rectangular Otsuki school tsuba carved and inlaid with a man with an umbrella holding the hand of a little boy as they look up towards a cuckoo flying overhead on the reverse of the tsuba, where a verse is inscribed, with signature (O)tsuki Mitsuoki, with a kao, 6.5cm.; and a shakudo tsuba with a scalloped edge, carved and inlaid with a crane standing on a post, with signature Ishiguro Masatsune, 7.45cm.; a fine shibuichi tsuba inlaid in various metals with a pair of ducks, with signature Togakushi Masatsune, 6.7cm.; and a slightly trapezoid rectangular tsuba carved and inlaid in various metals with a fisherman in his boat trying to control his net, with signature Toryusai Hogen and a kao, 7.7cm.
