A SHAKUDO TSUBA BY UMETADA SHIGENARI AND A SHIBUICHI TSUBA BY ICHINOMIYA NAGAYOSHI
Edo period (late 17th/late 18th century)
An oval shakudo tsuba carved and inlaid with the sun going down over the 'Married Rocks', as fishing boats return home, signed Yamashiro kuni Nishijin no ju Umetada Tachibana Shigenari, 7.3cm.; and an oval shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with the poetess Ono no Komachi in her old age, the inlays in shakudo, silver and gold, signed Kenryushi Nagayoshi with kao, 6.7cm. Lot Essay

Umetada Shigenari was active during the Enpo-Tenwa periods (1673-1684). He was retained by the bakufu government. Named Shichizaemon, Shigenari adopted the family name of Tachibana and lived at Shiba kata Monzen-machi in Edo.
Ichinomiya Nagayoshi was the adopted son of Ichinomiya Nagatsune (1722-1787).
