A TSUBA BY HAMANO TOSHIYASU AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (19th century)
An oval shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with Kan'u sitting inside a room leaning out of an oval window, gazing at a star constellation visible between clouds, with signature Haruaki Hogen, 7.25cm.; a sentoku-ishime tanto tsuba carved and inlaid with two turtles by a river bank under the moon, signed Nara Masahiro with a kao, 6.2cm.; an almost circular shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with an oxherd sitting on the back of his ox, playing the flute, signed Toshinsai Hamano Toshiyasu, 6.8cm.; an almost circular shakudo tsuba carved and inlaid with a faithful minister of the Song dynasty, with the child Emperor in his arms after the defeat of the Song forces by Kublai Kahn, being tempted by a dragon offering fruit to jump with him into the sea, signed Masahide, with a kao, 6.7cm.; a copper and shibuichi tanto tsuba fringed by four lobed forms decorated in gold with bekko [tortoiseshell patterns], 6.2cm., and an oval dark shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with a man poling a log raft along a river, signed Nukagawa Yasuyuki, 6.35cm.
