A TANAKA SCHOOL TSUBA, A TSUBA SIGNED ICHII AND ANOTHER

A rounded square iron Tanaka school tsuba carved and inlaid with the figure of an oni standing outside a house, aghast at the sight of a dried fish-head fixed to the wall, signed (Sho)kosai Toshi with a kao, 7.1cm.; a shallow mokko-shaped shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with a branch of cherry in blossom and on the reverse with snowflakes in silver under a gold moon, signed San sho(sha?) Ichii, 6.65cm.; and an oval sentoku tsuba carved and inlaid with the figure of Gama Sennin, his toad in his right hand and a basket in his left, standing on the edge of a cliff, with signature Miboku, late Hamano school, 7.5cm. Lot Essay

The head of a iwashi [sardine], fixed above the door of a house, was used as a charm to prevent the return of oni to a house after their expulsion in the setsubun ceremony on New Year's Eve.
Sanshosha Ichii was a pupil of Goto Ichijo, working in Edo in the second half of the 19th century.
