Signed Dewa Akita No Ju Shoami Denbei, [SHOAMI DENBEI OF AKITA IN DEWA PROVINCE], Edo Period (17th/18th century)
The shibuichi plate chiselled with a combination of the rinbo [wheel of Buddhist law] and tomoe [comma] within the rim, the tomoe has a sunken surface incised with yasurime, inlaid with Hirata style cloisonné enamels, gold spirals and dots, the outer edge of the rim polished and inlaid with karakusa in gold hirazogan

Lot Essay

Shoami Denbei (1651-1723) worked for the Satake Daimyo of Akita, as the cloisonné enamel inlays are contemporary with the tsuba it would appear to be a co-production with a Hirata master, both the fourth Shigekata (1671-1714) and the fifth Narikado (1671-1757) were working at the relevant period.
