A SENTOKU TSUBA BY NARA TSUNESHIGE AND NINE OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A rounded square sentoku Nara tsuba carved on the face with Fukurokuju, Ebisu and Daikoku poring over a handscroll, the reverse with Daikoku's rice bales and Hotei's sack under a pine tree, all on ishime [stone textured] ground, signed Nara Tsuneshige, 7.3cm.; a rounded square iron tsuba, carved and inlaid in various metals with a centipede, the Seta bridge and the slopes of Mikamiyama from the legend of Tawara Toda, 8.5cm.; an almost circular iron tsuba, pierced with a single, bold key-fret and signed Kishu no ju Teimei, 8.2cm.; another carved and inlaid in copper, gilt and shibuichi with a shishi beside peonies among rocks, signed Ipposai, 7.2cm.; an iron tsuba pierced with a design consisting of three seals, 7.2cm.; an iron Bushu tsuba pierced and carved with six shells, 7.25cm.; an iron tsuba pierced and carved with chidori flying over waves, gold inlaid eyes, signed Tomohisa, 7.35cm.; an oval iron nanban tsuba, pierced and carved with opposing dragons, 7.5cm.; an almost circular iron tsuba carved on the face with flying geese, sails in the mist and drying fishing nets, the reverse with a stem of flowering chrysanthemum and a seal in the form of a kao, signed Kikunan ... no zu Masakatsu, Bushu Shoami, 7.2cm.; and a fine late Owari iron tsuba, pierced with a five-pointed star, 8.2cm.
