A SHAKUDO TSUBA BY YOSHIMASA AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A shibuichi wakizashi tsuba carved and inlaid with the broken bridge over the Uji river, with Kagesue and Takatsuna contesting with each other to reach the other side of the river first, signed Eiransai Yoshimasa, 19th century, 6.6cm.; a rounded lozenge-shaped copper tsuba, the entire tsuba, apart from the seppadai, boldly carved with a dragon clutching a jewel, 7.3cm.; an almost circular copper tsuba carved with Kanzan expounding on a handscroll to Jittoku, with signature Joi, with an inlaid silver seal, 7.1cm.; a brass tanto tsuba of oval form inlaid on the face and over the rim with rats in a wedding procession, 6.5cm.; a brass tsuba carved without the seppadai as a dragon, 6.9cm.; and a good oval dark shibuichi tanto tsuba carved and inlaid with a bakemono with a long neck, dressed as a priest and sitting beside a hibachi, which is turning into an oni, on the back a large shakudo club is standing behind the bakemono, signed Katsuryuken Naochika, 5.3cm.
