A TSUBA BY KOSO NAGAYOSHI AND EIGHT OTHERS
Momoyama/Edo period (16th/19th century)
A large rounded square tsuba carved and inlaid with a figure of a man in a snow-laden straw hat, holding a sake container, with two smaller containers hanging at his back, sitting on the ground blowing on his hands to keep them warm, a sosho inscription, hovers in the snowy air, signed Koso Nagayoshi on an inlaid gold panel on the reverse, 9.1cm.; an almost circular iron tsuba carved with a writhing dragon, its eyes inlaid in gold, probably school of Hitotsuyanagi Tomoyoshi, but unsigned, 7.5cm.; a late Nara school tsuba with Jurojin and his crane in silver, copper and gold inlay, 6.65cm.; a circular iron tsuba with swelling waves in katakiri-bori, signed Myochin Shikibu ki no Muneaki saku utsutsu mushi, 7.35cm.; an oval Choshu school iron tsuba carved with an eagle perched above a monkey and two young seeking shelter from danger in a cave, with waves crashing against the rock, whilst on the other side two monkeys relax in safety beside a waterfall, signed Shunyoken, with a kao, 7.5cm.; a good iron Heianjo tsuba inlaid on one side in brass and silver with a dragon and on the other side, in brass, with crashing waves, 7.3cm.; an iron Ko-Shoami tsuba, pierced with a wavy line, perhaps the cord of a camp curtain, the rim representing the top of the curtain, 8.3cm.; a hachi-mokko tsuba, both faces with panels containing various designs, signed on the reverse Jusan, 7.5cm.; and a large iron Nanban tsuba, square with slightly re-entrant corners, pierced and carved with two dragons amongst scrolling clouds, 8.45cm.
