A GOOD HEIANJO TSUBA AND NINE OTHERS
Momoyama/Edo period (16th/19th Century)
A circular Heianjo tsuba, pierced with a plum blossom and a sea cucumber and inlaid in brass hirazogan with four crayfish among waves, 7.9cm.; an iron tsuba, the face carved with driving rain falling on chrysanthemums and other subjects, signed Ichiryusha jin Katsumitsu tsukuru, 8.5cm.; carved and pierced with a chrysanthemum growing from a barrel and a morning glory from a hanging basket, signed Choshu no ju Tomohisa, 7.6cm.; a rounded hexagonal tsuba inlaid with five horses, inscribed Yanagawa Naomasa, 7.7cm.; a circular iron tsuba, inlaid in shakudo, shibuichi and sentoku with three geese flying over a namazu and a gourd, the reverse with three sea shells (one dented), signed Aidzu no ju Shoami, 7.8cm.; a mokko-shaped tsuba with swelling rims to each lobe of the mokko-form, the exterior surface of which is decorated with double karakusa of kiri in two colours of gold nunome-zogan, 8.3cm.; a large circular Kyo-sukashi tsuba pierced with a kiri-mon, 8.5cm.; an iron tsuba formed around the seppa-dai by eight formalised, intertwining geese, 19th century, 6.3cm.; an almost circular tsuba carved and pierced with two carp darting amongst the waves, details inlaid in gold, 7.2cm.; and a circular tsuba, pierced and carved with a diminutive horse in the process of devouring a spider's web, Kyo Shoami, 7.6cm.
