A DATED TSUBA BY TANAKA TOSHIKAGE AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (19th century)
An iron tsuba carved and inlaid with a badger seated on a bank amid grasses and wild flowers gazing at the moon, the reverse with a bat seen over rocks, grasses and wild flowers, dated 1869 and signed Hoshinsai Toshikage, 7.3cm.; a copper tsuba of irregular form decorated over an ishime ground with a flight of chidori, over waves, signed Tomonaga and with a kao, 7cm.; a sentoku tsuba, inlaid in takabori with a dead fugu and four clam shells, signed Shishida Chomin, 6.2cm.; a circular shibuichi tsuba carved in shishiai-bori and inlaid in shakudo, shibuichi, copper and two colours of gold with Yoshitsune, Benkei and three other warriors disguised as yamabushi at the Ataka barrier gate, a crow perching on a tree on the reverse, with signature Shunshodo Konkwan with a kao, 6.2cm.; a square sentoku ishime tsuba inlaid with a fox and strands of grass, with signature (O)tsuki Mitsuoki, 6.95cm.; and a rounded square iron tsuba carved and inlaid in silver, shibuichi and gold with snow-laden bamboo and two geese flying towards the crescent moon, with signature (O)tsuki Mitsuoki, 8cm.
