A NANBAN CUP-SHAPED TSUBA AND TEN OTHERS
Edo period (17th/19th century)
An iron cup-shaped tsuba decorated on the face with flowering vines in silver and copper inlay, the seppadai in silver nunome-zogan, the sides with a 'splashed' decoration and the reverse engraved with karakusa and clouds and finished in silver nunome-zogan, 6.6cm.; a circular iron tsuba carved with a sage sitting reading in a rustic hut, 7.4cm.; a mokko-shaped iron Saotome armourer's tsuba pierced with four bonji [Sanskrit characters], 7.67cm.; a square iron katchushi tsuba with the corners turned over, stamped on both sides with a hatched design, 9.5cm.; a circular iron tsuba inscribed Umetada Munetake, 7.8cm.; a large mokko-shaped tsuba carved and inlaid with a Chinese trading junk, signed Bunryushi Bunyu, 9.2cm.; a circular iron tsuba carved with deer and other animals, with signature Haruta Hiro ... saku, 8.4cm.; a Kyo-sukashi tsuba, pierced with abstract forms, 7.4cm.; an iron tsuba pierced and outlined with irregular forms of a wheel, aoi leaves and scroll forms, traces of gold nunome-zogan, 7.5cm; a large triple-lobed iron tsuba, carved and inlaid with three sennin, one of them with a staff and a begging bowl, sitting by the water-side, signed Ichi ... Masasada, 9.8cm.; and an iron katchushi tsuba pierced with a katami-gawari [divided in two halves] design of a chrysanthemum in the upper right and a cherry blossom on engraved Amida yasurime in the bottom left, 7.8cm.
