A 'NOVELTY' O-KOZUKA WITH A SLIDING SHOJI, TWO KOZUKA INSCRIBED HAMANO MASAYUKI AND TWELVE OTHERS
Edo period (19th century)
A large kozuka with an iron frame and back and a shakudo plate inlaid with a village landscape, the shoji on one of the houses sliding to reveal two figures within the house; an iron kozuka carved and inlaid with a figure of Tekkai Sennin blowing out his spirit, with signature Masayuki saku, Hamano school; an iron kozuka carved and inlaid with the figure of Kojima no Takanori, disguised as a peasant, writing a message of hope in the form of a poem on a cherry tree for the banished emperor Go-Daigo, with signature Hamano Masayuki; an iron kozuka with the figure of a courtier playing the game of kemari [kickball], with signature Nagayoshi; an iron kozuka, lacquered in an unusual gold 'splatter' technique, reverse carved in relief with the figure of Daikoku, his sack on his back, standing on top of two rice bales, the date inscribed above him, unsigned, but with the cyclical date Genji 1st year [1864]; a shibuichi kozuka carved with Hotei asleep on his sack, with signature Nagatsune; an iron kozuka of the badger tea kettle, with signature Nara Toshinaga saku; seven other kozuka and a shiiremono (15)
